Essential precautions
Use these checks in every negotiation, even when an offer appears trustworthy.
Protect passwords and codes
Never share passwords, codes received by text or email, full card numbers or access to your bank account.
Confirm payment in your bank
Do not rely on a receipt image. Open your banking app and confirm that the money actually arrived.
Prefer public places
For in-person exchanges, choose a busy place, tell someone you trust and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
Common scam warning signs
- A request for advance payment without a way to inspect the product.
- An external link to “confirm your account”, “receive the sale” or pay a fee.
- Pressure to decide immediately or move the conversation away from the listing contacts.
- Someone who avoids calls, meetings or simple questions about the item.
